Lusa School Talks
A space for reflection on the many practical questions raised by teaching Portuguese as a foreign language

Conference Series on the Portuguese Language
Portuguese is a language spoken by more than 260 million people across five continents. According to United Nations estimates, by 2050 this number will reach almost 400 million and by 2100 it will exceed 500 million. In the European Union, around 3% of the population speaks Portuguese. It is one of the 24 official and working languages and, in fact, the third most spoken official EU language in the world. There is also a growing demand for learning Portuguese among non-Lusophone foreigners, not only in Europe but also across other continents. Why is that? If we consider Portuguese a global language, what path will it follow?
With the aim of reflecting on the many practical challenges that the teaching of Portuguese as a foreign language presents, Lusa Language School is organising a series of three online conferences, featuring various participants involved in the field. Together, we will reflect on the motivations that lead an increasing number of foreigners to learn the Portuguese language, and explore how linguistic exchange can be strengthened.
The conferences will be broadcast live. Participation is free, but subject to registration.
